Barkerville is a historic gold mining town. Originally founded in 1862, the prospect of gold in Barkerville quickly made it the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. The historic site has live entertainment at the Theatre Royal, guided tours, street theatre, and demonstrations. Barkerville also has a wide range of traditional merchants, restaurants, and sleeping accommodations.

The Bowron Lakes Provincial Park's 116 km long canoe circuit is renowned world-wide, attracting many visitors from Europe, the United States and across Canada. The circuit consists of a two to four day trip that follows lakes, rivers, and includes a few short portages between waterways.
